"Be Your Own Advocate: Oral HerStory as a Path to Radical Healing"

Left to Right: Dr. Michi Fu, Ki Yan Ip, Wenxuan (Amy) Bai, Winniebhelle Cadiz, Bianca Broomfield, and Vicky Nguyen
Our approach drew from the Radical Healing Framework, which centers cultural authenticity, critical consciousness, and collective resilience. Through oral history, we aimed not only to preserve these leaders’ voices but also to spark empowerment for those navigating their own paths in the field.
As a contributing author, I shared part of my own story for the project and collaborated on editing the session footage to shape its final narrative. One of the most memorable moments was hearing how each leader defined advocacy in her own terms, a reminder that self-advocacy can be both deeply personal and powerfully collective.
During the session, we explored key themes that emerged from the interviews:
  • Amplifying marginalized voices in professional spaces.
  • Fostering mentorship and intergenerational connections.
  • Honoring non-traditional career paths.
  • Building cultural pride and community resilience.

We also invited attendees to reflect on their own journeys through questions such as: Who has helped shape your path? How do you advocate for yourself while advocating for others?
The next step for this project is to make the interviews and stories accessible through a public digital archive. Being part of this work has strengthened my commitment to ensuring that advocacy and representation remain central to how we build our professional communities.
